Holy BALLS, y'all.

I just totally put together a working writing system.  Holy b'geezus.  You can see working examples of it here and here and also here (no spoilers; those just link to the image files with the names written out).  More will go up as I write 'em.  I'm also in the process of outlining a wiki entry on how the system works, including a chart of the base characters and explanations on how things actually are written out.  There is a method to the madness!

Oh my GAWD this was so much fun to do.  Hellfire, I might even get up the gumption to work out the Aurocan system as well!  HEEHEEHEE I HAVE NO LIFE.

  1. That's awetastic! How does it work? Is it all syllabic, or alphabetic? When Ebrellin-i writes, is it all fancified and squiggly? Does Lyric write in big BLOCK LETTERS? Does Uncle Lui have those nasty brown coffee rings all over his pretty calligraphy? Will we ever know?!

It's not done yet, but SOME of your questions are already answered. XD

  3. Ah! I like that it's all Englishified. Being Tolkeiny is cool and all, in a OMGLANGUAGENERDSAREHOT kind of way, but I think it's fun to be able to decifer things like an alternate writing system WITHOUT having to also worry about whether I'm going to get shivved by a particle with a bad attitude from the wrong side of the dictionary. There's "wow, this is fun to decipher and play with" and there's "Holy crap I need a doctorate to understand this!!"

But then, if you ever do decide to make Radian fullbore linguistically rediculous, you could corrupt all the Tolkein fanboys, so it's really all a matter of priorities.

  4. Is this where I'm not supposed to mention that I was coming up with declensions while taking a shower yesterday? I keep inventing words, and then I sit there and go "OK, if this is the infinitive, what are... AUGH STOP BEFORE WE GO CRAZY... AAAAAAUUUUGH!"

It's a lot of fun, though. I've heard how the history of a world can be described in the forms of its languages, but I hadn't really experienced it much until I started really working on building Radian (and, to a lesser degree, Aurocan and Chatherian).
